 Kamy Shaw, CPM, AAHCC
The Senior midwife and proprieter of ABW, Kamy was born and raised in El Paso. She is the mother of twin boys, born naturally, with midwives, in 1993. She is also the stepmom to 3 children and grandmom of 5. Kamy comes from a family of doctors and healers. Many of her relatives going back 6 and 7 generations were in the healing arts.
Kamy's grandmother was one of the first women chiropractors to be licensed. Her grandfather was a doctor, and her father worked with him doing births and family care. Kamy's sister has been a licensed herbalist for 30 years. Kamy became interested in midwifery as early as 16 years of age and has explored an education which has included fulfilling all requirements and completion of a MEAC accredited midwifery program, professional labor assistant as well as becoming a Bradley childbirth instructor. She is dedicated to helping women have the best birth experience and care possible. She is a licensed midwife in Texas and New Mexico as well as a CPM. Kamy has close to 13 years experience in the Southwest (since 1995). Kamy trains midwife apprentices for licensing all across the United States. Kamy does public speaking on many topics ranging from coming of age to menopause and everything in between about women's issues and awareness. Her efforts have helped to expand the scope of care that women receive and expect as well as raise consciousness about the state of women's healthcare in the U.S. Kamy also home schools her children and grandchildren.
Kamy received her formal training as a midwife at Maternidad La Luz, a birthing center in El Paso, Texas. While at Maternidad she perfected heremergency skills, and has since stayed on as a staff midwife and academic educator. Her professional birth settings have included and continue to include hospital labor support, birth center births, as well as home births.
Kamy has been supporting birth in many settings since she became dedicated to helping women with their birth experiences. A large portion of her birth support experience has been in the hospital setting where she has become well-versed in the legal issues surrounding women health care and has utilized her abilities to advocate for women, babies and families.
